The setting in the book I find is tropical and a bit worrying. All the characters are nervous that the japanese ships and planes could spot their camp, this is why I find this scene at the start of the book worrying. Further into the book the scene changes to a dark tropical space where Biggles and the rest are hiding and waiting for the japanese attack and preparing for any sightings of the camp.
